Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Players are granted the right to challenge specific decisions from the chair umpire, following the practice already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
