Trump Calls for Jailing of Chicago Mayor and Illinois Governor as Military Forces Arrive in City

Ex-President Donald Trump on midweek called for the incarceration of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, alleging them of failing to protect ICE agents.

"Chicago's Mayor should be jailed for endangering Immigration agents!" Trump posted on social media early Wednesday. "Governor Pritzker as well!"

The two leaders identify as the Democratic party.

Trump's statements coincide with the deployment of state military troops in the Windy City area following directives from the current government, despite strong objections from Illinois authorities such as Pritzker and Johnson.

"This represents not the first instance where Trump attempted to have an African American leader unjustly detained," Mayor Johnson stated on that day. "I'm not going anywhere."

Pritzker also replied via online channels, declaring: "I will not back down. Trump is now calling for imprisonment of elected officials checking his power. What remains on the road toward full-blown autocracy?"

As of midweek, National Guard units from Texas had reached the Elwood army reserve center, a military installation approximately 80 kilometers from the city, as the federal government pushes forward with its hardline urban crime policy and immigration enforcement operations.

The president has labeled Chicago a "dangerous disaster zone", even though police data indicate notable reductions in most criminal activities, such as murders.

On Wednesday, 200 Texas National Guard troops were expected to deploy to the Chicago area, with another 300 Illinois guard forces readying for deployment, according to reports. Authorities indicated the troops would not perform police functions but would protect federal immigration agents and government buildings.

Soldiers wearing uniforms with state guard patches were observed at the US army reserve center in Elwood. Trucks marked "Emergency Disaster Services" dropped off sanitation facilities and other supplies. Trailers were arranged in rows. Additional fencing was placed around the compound.

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered no-fly zones over the army reserve center for security reasons until 6 December.

Federal authorities has escalated deportation operations in Chicago in recent weeks, triggering protests, especially near an processing facility in Broadview.

Earlier this week, Illinois and Chicago filed a lawsuit against the administration, attempting to halt the National Guard deployment, asking a federal judge to stop what they describe as "Trump's long-declared 'War'" on Chicago and Illinois, calling it "unlawful and risky".

A court hearing on their lawsuit is set for Thursday.

Mayor Johnson also issued an executive order on that day prohibiting federal immigration agents and others from using city-owned property as staging areas for deportation efforts.

The governor has charged Trump of using military forces as "staged tools" and "chess pieces".

During a press briefing on the previous day, he said that Trump is attempting to "rationalize and normalize the deployment of military personnel under his personal authority."

The historic federal law restricts the army's involvement in civilian law enforcement. However, Trump has stated he would be prepared to invoke the emergency powers, which permits a commander-in-chief to dispatch regular army in regions that are unable to suppress an insurrection or are resisting national authority.

After beginning his new administration, Trump has dispatched or mentioned deploying troops to at least 10 cities, including Baltimore; Washington DC; New Orleans and West Coast locations like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, arguing that the armed forces is essential to combat crime and protect immigration agents.

Statistics indicates that serious offenses nationwide has decreased in recent years. In Chicago, for example, homicides were reduced 31% to 278 through late summer, per law enforcement reports.

New survey data published on Wednesday found that most Americans disapprove of the sending of military forces without an external threat.
