The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors at play, not just the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
