Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued 14 individuals stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,ā€ an emergency official explained. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.ā€

As of Monday morning, officials announced two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms cause an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week due to the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
