European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
